FACEBOOK APPLICATIONThis was another simple Facebook application, and profile photo. I made these pieces as a contractor for Expion (Social Media Advertising Company). I did not develop the visual style, I just worked within the visual identity created for the campaign and adapted it to fit the new formats. I also changed and edited images, typographic elements, and created some assets to complete the project.

My client Expion, a social media management software company, wanted to make a piece that explained the merits of going local on social media. The whole concept, text, and some of the layout work were done by designers at Expion. I created all the assets (except for the couple in the car at the top which was from Istock) and pieces and set all the type on the piece. As you can see its highly text heavy. I worked with Expion to strip out some of the copy, but in the end they required most of it to stay. As a result the piece is a little cramped, but the format combined with the the volume of copy made this an inevitability.
She already had a name, but everything else was up in the air. We talked back and forth about concepts and settled on a vintage pinup theme. With some reference images of both pinups and vintage design I went to work. The end results were in line with the look that I was hoping to achieve.
Games like Dead Space, Dead Space 2, the Silent Hill series, and Farcry 2 all manage to play out without any real HUD intrusion. This is a very positive thing for most users most of the time, but it can also become a burden. Disorientation, and confusion can result. A toggle HUD, or a HUD that can be called up when needed then removed again, is a possible solution. This is a "toggle HUD" I dreamed up while at Red Storm Entertainment, and was intended for a present day military shooter. The style took its cues from modern military displays as seen in planes, tanks, and the like.

This second image is another way to remove a lot of persistent information from the HUD freeing more screen space and yielding player immersion. Its a "drone" view, which gives the player a concept of their location and helps with wayfinding within the game space. Neither possible solution should be viewed as persistent, but would instead be called up by the user when they are confused or unsure.
From the start this project was challenging. They had several pages of information about the conference that they wanted fit onto one 8.5 X 11 piece of paper for their call for papers. We discussed their needs and I was able to cull some of the less important information out to make the task more realistic. The end result of the call for papers is shown below.

After the call for papers, I got to work on a "poster" for the conference that would be posted around Rutgers Campus. They had more limitations for this piece as well. They wanted to work with a size that they could print through their university printers. They settled on 11 X 14. Again They had a lot of information that they wanted to display, 4 pages to be exact. I organized and prioritized the information, and created the piece shown below. Turnaround time for these pieces was very fast, about 1-2 days for each. All photography was taken, and edited by me.
I am not going to go through all the icons meanings, and many are highly abstract simply because the concept they represent is also highly abstract. Some of the Icons also use a visual language that is already established throughout the rest of the game. The concept behind the icons was a clean simple look that referenced a backlight or projection based display system.
I made this flow in Adobe Illustrator as a proof of concept and to help clear up some issues/questions with menu functionality. As a team, me and the rest of the UI Department, reviewed this plan, and adjusted it after some user testing into a final flow for the community section of that game. The flow shows with arrows where button clicks will take a user, and the blue bars show what button is active in each frame. Here is a LINK TO A HIGH RES JPG of the final flow for the community section of the game.
They had some extra work they needed done quickly so they asked for some help. This project took 3 days. After the first day I submitted a draft, and the Duke client came back with some suggestions, and then I made an iteration that looked very similar to this, and they asked for a few final tweaks and this is the end result. Both pieces are off being printed now and I will update with pictured of printed pieces when they are available.

**UPDATED**

The first run came in from printers. One image changed due to a resolution issue. These are the final versions, and will be distributed at Duke Hospital.
I used lots of reference and tried to mimmic shapes that I saw in their letter forms. The result is a face that clearly looks foreign, but if you look closer there are clear definable letterforms that can be seen.
These two screens all show parts of the same interface system in action. The look of the interface is reminiscent of older military HUDS, but feels more modern due to crisp lines and vector text. The limitations on color were part of the art direction, and although the lack of color variation helps unify the system visually, it also results in a lack of contrast among individual parts. I took this into consideration while working on this system and tried to use scale, animation, and position to help the end user find the information they needed as simply as possible.

This first image shows the player character in the bottom left, and a reload prompt in the middle of the screen. Below the aiming reticule is a thin line, and a shaded area. This is a in world 3-d representation of the blast radius for a claymore explosive. Above that is the Silhouette of an enemy who has been detected behind the building on the right. At the bottom right is the persistent information that is constantly necessary for the user. The large number is the amount of ammo left in their clip, the smaller number is the total ammo they have left in supply, below that is a grenade indicator, and the firing mode they have selected, in this case full auto.

This second image is far more complex, and rich with both information, and texture. Texture in the sense that the HUD has far more visual weight, and clearly conveys a feeling of "high tech" while still being reminiscent of traditional military HUDs. This screen displays the player character's health directly on the character, and shows possible interactions that the player can experience with the world as well. This screen was intended to be used as a "toggle hud" which could be accessed by the user when they needed additional information about the game world that wasn't always pertinent to display. This separation between persistently displayed information and context specific / user accessed information allows for the HUD to remain simpler during most situations.George Lamontagne IIIhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12330033074261403702noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7850189425272103496.post-79718706973212300892010-09-29T11:35:00.000-07:002010-09-29T11:35:46.861-07:00FROSTY POSTERThis poster was one of several for Frost Factory, a toy company started by a friend of mine and myself. There tons of problems with traditional "burning flares" and all the electric flares on the market are awkward, bulky, and limiting. I wanted to make a device that charged while the car was in use, and was ready in case of an emergency. The fit of combining a flashlight and road flare seemed obvious to me, since both are necessary in any roadside hazard kit, and both are primarily light emitting devices. The end result for me was the safe light.
The idea was to make them light, portable, and comfortable. I looked towards nature for inspiration, focusing on the tail of a scorpion, and the way the segments fold onto themselves.
The driving voice of the publication is one of environmental and social awareness.
The conference was titled "Type Face" and was to feature many well know designers. All the type on the mailer was printed cut up photocopied, and manipulated out side of the computer, and then rescanned. This mailer never went to print.
Inside there is a sign up form, a schedule, a sponsor section, and event information. I was responsible for the organization of content, the form of its presentation, and the actual presentation of the end artifact.
They were designed to be affixed to a box for a toy series that I was working on at the time. I have come to enjoy this specific piece more on its own, as opposed to mounted on the toy box its self.
The concept is simple enough. The ball in the center guides the cursor on the screen like a "Old School" traditional ball mouse, but the ball can also be raised off the table its being used on, and in that case the device becomes a stationary, stable platform to be used as a trackball.
The first few weeks or so will posts of older work in order to catch up with the present. Lets start with some photos. More can be found here at my FLICKR account.
